How to choose a headlamp: the criteria that matter

Beam, fit, charging and runtime: compare useful headlamp features and decide whether a single lamp or a two-pack suits your plans.

The essentials, first

Choose a headlamp around what you need to see and how long your activity lasts. Then consider fit, controls and charging. A lumen rating or a price on its own cannot tell you which of two lamps suits you better.

Keep in mind

  • Choose your main use before comparing models.
  • Check runtime in the mode you will actually use.
  • A two-pack equips two people; it does not increase each lamp’s output.
In this guide

1. Start with your outing

Finding your keys, pitching a tent and running on rough ground involve different tasks. Write down a simple scenario: “I need both hands to set up camp” or “I need to follow a path for an evening”. This gives you something useful to compare.

For a first purchase, focus on your most frequent activity. If an organised race, mountain route or workplace requires specific equipment, check those requirements first. An everyday headlamp does not become technical equipment because of a picture showing a demanding activity.

  • Do you need to see a nearby object, your footing or a distant section?
  • How long must the light work, allowing for a margin?
  • Are you going alone, with one other person or with an equipped group?

2. Look at where the light goes

Petzl distinguishes wide beams for nearby tasks, focused beams for distance and mixed beams combining both. This helps explain specifications; it does not establish the performance of a Dealeez model.

Compare beam shape, available modes and stated range separately. For a map, consider the light on the nearby surface. For walking, check suitability for your planned ground. A bright photograph cannot measure either quality.

3. Try the movements you will make

The strap should stay in place without constant tightening. Adjust it over what you will wear, such as a hat. Turn your head and bend down to check that the lamp stays put.

Find the on switch, mode changes and full off setting before leaving. If there is a motion sensor, learn how to disable it too. Familiar controls are more useful than an unfamiliar feature at the moment you need light.

  • The strap stays put without uncomfortable pressure.
  • You can find the desired mode easily.
  • You can switch off and pack the lamp without accidentally turning it on.

4. Compare usable runtime

A runtime figure needs an associated mode and measurement conditions. Do not compare one lamp on its lowest setting with another at maximum output. If those details are missing, ask before an outing that depends on the lamp.

For rechargeable models, check the connector, required cable and charging instructions. Carrying a cable does not guarantee access to power. Charge before departure and plan a backup appropriate to the outing.

For rain, look for a documented protection rating and its limits. An “outdoor” label, USB-C socket or photograph in wet weather is not proof of water resistance.

5. Single or two-pack: count the users

One lamp equips one person. With two people, separate lights let one find something in a bag while the other sets up the tent. A two-pack supports this arrangement without changing each lamp’s individual capabilities.

The Dealeez white headlamp comes singly or in a pair, with an adjustable strap, USB-C charging and a motion sensor. Match the contents to your actual needs. Someone already carrying suitable backup lighting may not need another lamp.

Your checklist before buying

Compare two product pages using these five points. Missing information is a question to ask, not a performance claim to assume. Keep the model’s manual available for its specific instructions.

  • My activity and expected duration.
  • Documented modes, beam and runtime.
  • Strap fit and access to controls.
  • Charging, cable and backup where needed.
  • Number of lamps needed and exact pack contents.

Your questions, answered.

How many lumens does a headlamp need?

There is no single figure for every activity. Beam shape, viewing distance, terrain and runtime at the chosen setting also matter. Compare documented specifications relevant to your plans.

Can a rechargeable headlamp cover several days?

That depends on runtime at your chosen setting and access to charging. Plan your total lighting needs and suitable backup; do not rely on an unverified socket or power bank.

Does the Dealeez two-pack contain different models?

The white headlamp two-pack contains two of the model sold singly. It equips two people or provides a second lamp.
